A little about me . . .

 

I didn’t always want to be a mom.  So, when I found out I was pregnant with our first son, I was overwhelmed and uninformed to say the least.  His birth changed me.  My eyes were opened to all the choices I had (and the power that gave) me in birth!  When we decided to have a second child, we decided that we wanted a more holistic birth.  So, we hired a doula, attended childbirth classes, and invested in the many facets of growth that pregnancy, birth and parenting allows.  Our childbirth educator helped us see birth as a healthy, normal process with many hidden opportunities for growth and introspection.

        Our second birth was what I describe as a “spa-like-birth”.  Not only did the skillful care and direction from my doula help me feel more comfortable, she also helped my husband feel more capable.   The birth of our second son inspired me to become a childbirth educator and a doula -- a career I have loved for the last 17 years!

        We had two more sons in the next five years.  And, each birth was a different experience showing me in no uncertain terms that the meaning of birth (and maybe the meaning of life) is to have a relaxed grip on my ideals.  Aim for what I want, but enjoy the complexities of what I get.  Participate fully.  Engage in a “no regrets” kind of way.  Trust my intuition, and act on it, so I never look back and say . .. “Oh, I knew I should have . . . “

       Along the way, birth has become my passion.  It is a word picture for everything I believe and experience in life.  It shows me the importance of trust, the depth of commitment, the necessity of interdependence, and deepens my faith.  As a doula and a childbirth educator, my hope is to build the confidence of the couple in each other and in the whole process so they can treasure and cherish their births as I have mine.
